Research has shown a link between cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease leads to increased cytokine production, which triggers a cascade of chemical processes, including pus, swelling, pain, fever, and an increase in the liver’s C-reactive protein (CRP). CRP has been linked to reduced renal function and increased risk for heart attacks. However, patients who seek treatment for periodontal disease can halt this process, as the treatment reduces their CRP levels over time.
